Practising P.E.T. and Love and Logic
Mom: Jack we have to talk. I want you to go to bed now. You want to fly your airplane AND you want me to help you with it. What are we going to do to make a compromise?
Jack: I don't know. I doddy, Mom. (I am sorry)
Mom: That is ok honey, you don't need to be sorry. I mean, what can be our stopping point for you to go to bed?
Jack: I don't know.
Mom: How many times will it take for you to feel good about flying your airplane then stopping and going to bed?
Jack: A thousand.
Mom: I don't feel good about that. How about ten?
Jack: Otay!
Mom: Ok. You will fly your airplane ten times and then go to bed?
Jack: Yes!
Mom: Ok, we will fly it ten times then go to bed.
We happily threw his airplane ten times. It took five minutes and we had a great time with high fives and kisses. He did ask to throw one basketball on his way to bed, please please please, clasping hands in front of his face and batting his eyelashes. Ok, one. One shot, it missed. "Ok, now show me you can stick to our agreement." Going downstairs. "Thank you, honey, now I know, tonight you can follow our compromise!" Use bathroom now, (reminder required and given: If you want to have water at your bedside. Luckily, the next step was not needed: count to three and no water at bedside). Brush teeth now, (reminder given: If you want to have treats tomorrow). Read book. Climb in bed now, (reminder given: If you want to get out of bed at 7:00, otherwise you have to stay in bed until the clock says 7:15). Say prayer. Goodnight. Goodnight. Close door. Ten minutes later, Mo-o-o-om!... Mom!! Go back into room.
Mom: Did you call me? Kneeling at bedside.
Jack: Yes. I dot to dell you dumdin. (I've got to tell you something.)
Mom: What is it, honey?
Jack: I dist yuv you dooooooh nut! (I just love you so much!) with a big squeeze around my neck.
Mom: Thank you, honey! I love to hear that! I love you so much, too! Kiss on cheek and return kiss. But now we have to get some sleep so we can have fun and play tomorrow.
Jack: Otay, Mom. Yawn. Goodnight. Goodnight. Sigh, it was a good night.
Jack: I don't know. I doddy, Mom. (I am sorry)
