Last time Jack was at the beach, two years ago, he did not go in the water at all. We did not bring his swim suit today because it was overcast and we thought Jack would not go very deep in the waves. We were wrong! He got soaked up to his neck!!

We bought this toy boat to play with in the water. The waves would take it out and bring it back, usually under the water. It was so fun to discover where it would turn up when the waves brought it back.

Dad was so great to rescue the boat in the deeper water. It was so fun! After almost two hours of watching waves bringing the boat back, one wave took the boat out to sea. Bye bye boat.

Then we stood in the sand while the waves splashed around our ankles. It was a neat sensation to stand still in the rushing tide; it felt like we were surfing. If we stood still as the tide went out, the sand buried our feet into holes in the beach. We held hands to steady ourselves and almost toppled over a few times.

I am so glad I caught a picture of this! After each boat launch, Jack would rush back and put his arm around Dad to watch the boat bob up and down in the waves.
That night, as we were getting ready for bed in the quiet of the evening, we asked Jack what his favorite part of the day was. "The boat in the ocean." That was our favorite part, too. Then Jack looked up with eyes that melted our hearts, "And my favorite part is holding hands." We could not have scripted a better time or a sweeter moment!
